With a number of 25.5 certified racers running under 7.50 increasing, rumors have been flying in various racer circles that a new chassis certification would be debuting in early 2009 that would allow folks to legally race at NHRA and IHRA Race Tracks.

It wasn't that long ago that many race cars underwent chassis modifications to be legal to run 7.50 and slower at NHRA and IHRA race tracks. The 25.5 chassis certification called for additional cage work including a funny car style halo. But in the last fifteen months a number of racers have come close to the 7.50 ET limit or have actually run quicker than that. Most tracks have given folks a warning and then let them continue to run, though in some cases the sub 7.50 passes were disallowed.

These days most 7-second racers are concerned with how they will be able to legally run quicker than 7.50 without entirely redoing their chassis setups to do a 25.2. The rumor of a 25.3 chassis specification has been out there since the fall of last year though as of today there is no official word of when that might be announced. This potentially new SFI specification would apply to those cars that are running faster than 7.49 and as fast as 6.50. This spec is rumored to allow cars to race at up to 3600 raceweight.

Dan Neumann of Dan Neumann Race Cars posted some information on November 5th, 2008 on www.YellowBullet.com.

"The new spec is 25.3, and should read close to as shown below when released.

Full bodied OEM Body Shell with Modified/OEM Floorpan. OEM Rockers and Firewall with OEM Frame or Uni-Body Construction
6.50 to 7.49 Seconds ET, 3,600 Lbs. Maximum

They (SFI) hope to have the spec finalized by end of the year. Until then, build or update your cars to 25.2 specs and include 1 1/2 .065 moly rear frame rails and the rear braces that 25.5 shows and your good. 25.2 is getting a revision also that will show and require the rear frame rails and braces I just mentioned. It was accidently left out."

We'll post any updates as we receive the information.
