GM fans have been lighting up the web discussing the debut of the 2012 ZL1 Camaro...

GM enthusiasts had been hearing for several months that a special edition Camaro would debut at the 2011 Chicago Auto Show, and the General did not disappoint.

GM unveiled it's Mustang killer, aptly named the ZL1. While most fans had heard rumors that we'd see the return of the Z/28, for once the boards didn't really have inside information.

Sporting a 550 HP, 6.2 liter LSA engine, this street beast only shares about 65% content with a Camaro SS model. Details will be forthcoming on the special components, but for now we know that the ZL1 will ride on electric mag-ride shocks, and have other special features that include electric power steering, different steering wheel, different fascia, and exhaust.

Despite our best attempt to cajole Scott Settlemire to lift the hood and let yours truly clamber onto the rotating platform, my bribes of imported beers and dry-aged steaks fell on deaf ears. While at the Chicago Auto Show, this beast is being displayed with the hood shut.

From the underside the car looked like a production car and we were able to snap some pics of the exhaust by hanging a very expensive camera over the side of a glass wall.

We look for eventually to test driving one of these GT500 killers later this year.
