Lightbulb Toyota Pedal Dissection

If you want to know the technical details of the flawed Toyota pedals, this is a good read with photos.

Interesting indeed. I wouldlike to hear what those idiots who LOVE to bash american iron have to say now. Its the first time I have ever heard of such a big recall in any american made car. The fix sounds weak too! It seems that the cars with the known crappy systems were intentionally sold to the american/european markets...coincidence? Think not says I.

They're saying that they are happy Toyota is doing something about it and that American car companies wouldn't try to fix their problems like this. They also say at least it's a small component and not mechanical failure like an engine or transmission like what happens to American cars.

You know, since American cars drop their transmissions and engines at like 36k miles when the warranty is up.

Always an excuse...

I still don't see how the Denso unit is that much better. Having the coils of a spring rub against a plastic housing is going to cause wear just like the plastic teeth of the CTS unit. Once the spring coils wear their path into the plastic they're not going to provide any dampening.

It's really a simple fix. I went out to Orlando International Airport last week with a group of other technicians from the Ford, Toyota, and Honda (my shop) from the same dealer network to fix 300 of Enterprise Rent-A-Cars Toyotas.

Toyota techs taught us how to do it, told us 10 minutes minimum. I got it down to about 4 cars in 10-15 minutes depending on the model. Got paid seven tenths of an hour per repair.

Simple as this....
1) Hook 9inch 1/4 extension to drill, 10mm deep well socket.
2) Pop off two pedal bolts
3) Disconnect wires
4) Insert feeler gauge in between the plunger and back wall of pedal assembly.
5) Take measurement cross reference it to chim size.
6) Insert chim
7) Re-install
8) Check voltage at WOT.
9) Done.

I'll be out at OIA all week again doing Hurtz cars. They have something like 9500 vehicles that need the repair. THey are just waiting on the shipment of chims.

Also there were a bunch of random units that had the Denso pedal setup. I really don't know if the chims will be a fix. Toyota could put out a TSB on the idiosyncrasies that one could do to prevent the situation. Apply brake, put car in neutral, turn ignition off?

Chim?

Are you trying to say "shim," or is chim some unknown part to me?

So, if it requires two, does that make it a chim-chim?

More than two may be more like a verse from Mary Poppins:
