That's awesome. I've often wondered what kind of person would just hang onto a runaway car and not think to turn it off or pop it into neutral.

Very funny and well written article. A girl at work has a 09 Camry. I should forward this to her to make sure she knows how to survive should the pedal stick. I often wonder if we will end up having a sedate trip to lunch or a rowdy ride with no end...

Brilliant addition to the site.

I, too, have lived to tell about an accelerator sticking. It was a Ford Ranger delivery truck. It was a wheezy 2.5, and when I drove it, it was to the floor. Well, one afternoon, the pedal got stuck, on of all ironic things, the floor mat. What did I do? I said "Oh Shit!" and then popped the thing in neutral. I yanked the mat back and back into drive I went.

I believe I was accelerating from about 35mph probably as slow as all the Toyota's were. I mean, hey, there could have been some other outside forces at work that caused people to freak and not know what to do -- like texting, for instance.

In all seriousness, I feel bad for anyone who has lost their lives, as well as their families.

they have what 9 models they are not allowed to sell at all right now? and forget where i heard this, but it was said that if it was to take longer than 4 months to fix the problem, and get those cars selling again, that the loss would be so great that Toyota would have to close its doors.

I will never understand why someone would no be able to either shut off the ignition or put the damn thing in neutral. I mean shit.... do you leave your car running in the garage at night? It does turn off.

My favorite part was the editor's disclosure at the bottom. "Proud survivor." Brilliant.
