View Full Version : Pretty sure this is a dumb question?

After seeing that mazda miata hooked up to the dyno backwards got me thinking . Ok on awd cars they need to be on a special dyno right? Where it allows both front and rear spin. Wonder if they charge more and what type of dyno it is?

dyno dynamics makes one im not sure how much it cost though, that info wasnt on their website. also i googled it and at one shop the hourly rate with a O2 wideband, dyno operator, and one hour worth of pulls was $85. So it's pretty close to just the normal hourly dyno rate.

Not a dumb question...
Dyno an AWD car or truck?.....I would venture to guess when dyno'ing a AWD vehicle you must have rollers that support all four wheels to spin...
maybe they disconnect a driveshaft??? i dunno i never thought about it

Mustang makes an AWD dyno, multiple rollers.

No way...Diconnecting an awd vehicle driveshaft to run on one shaft is bad idea..I did that with my AWD landcruiser and the tranny started to slip and started messing up..

Either the rollers would have to be able to slide to support different wheelbase lengths, or there would have to be several small rollers covering an area.

Problem around here is that there isn't any awd dynos for the evo guys. So they do all their tuning on the street. Closest one is in Atlanta I believe, which is a long way to drive for a tune and dyno.

I've seen this done a few different ways.
Like said, disconnect the driveshaft and dyno one set of tires, then there are AWD dynos. Actually a place I used years ago had one axle dyno, moved into another shop that did DSM's (Eagles, Talons, 3000GTs, EVO's, STi, etc etc and made their own customer AWD and had Dynojet make a custom setting for the program.

True good point...Maybe you just can't dyno AWD cars period? I'm suprised no one is chimming in on this???

I'm telling you that messes with the AWD trannies... Maybe it works on some cars..

I would think that they would charge a little bit of a premium at an AWD dyno, just because they are so few and far between. When there aren't many options, you basically just go to the closest one. My .02, never had a need for one.

Multiple rollers. They just had one on Extreme 4x4 the other day when they dyno'd a jeep

I think Bob at EPP said that they dropped the front drive shaft and pulled some sensors for a H2 project they are working on for a customer.

There's also the one that you remove the wheels and bolt the dynos up to the hubs.

Finish Line Performance in Illinois has an awd one, not sure on the rates though.

I guess that's one way to do it, but we just recently installed an Mustang all-wheel drive dyno at our school. It is adjustable and can fit anything from a mini cooper to my instructor's silverado ss (which is awd).
The second set of rollers slides back and forth so you can get the car mounted on the rollers.
kinda hard to see in that picture, but it is two separate pieces and it the back end just slides on rails. There is a massively huge driveshaft that connects the two sets of rollers together.
I'll try to see if i can get more pictures of it from my instructor... i took a bunch when we were installing it.
and it's bloody heavy, we had to rent a crane to come pick that second half of the dyno off the semi... we had a forklift that could do the first part, but the second half weighed more than Mustang said it would, so the forklift couldn't do it... Then because the crane couldn't fit inside our shop we had to have a semi-wrecker lift it inside our shop with his boom. lol

Yes, yes it is. The lighter half weighed i think 13 tons, the back half ended up weighing like 16.5 tons or something close to that.
