Smart guy driving on a flat tire today.

I was driving to work and saw a Nissan Maxima ahead that appeared to be driving on a flat rear tire. He was easily doing 65-70 mph on a completely flat tire. I pulled along side him, he had a woman in the passenger seat, both in their mid-late 40s. I motioned to them that something was wrong, and she rolled down the window.

"Your tire is flat!"

"We know, thanks."

They must have passed at least three more exits on the highway, still going 65-70 mph. I knew what was going to happen, so I moved slightly ahead of them to avoid the mess. Sure as shit, about another mile up the highway I see his tire start smoking in my mirror. Then the chunks began flying. Next I'm watching the remaining part of his belted radial start bashing his quarter panel as it rotates around the wheel.

It wasn't until all that happened that they decided to exit the highway and turn on their hazzards. It is amazing that this car contained not just one, but TWO idiots that didn't realize you shouldn't go fast on a flat tire.

Were they waiting on the auto-inflate to kick in or what? That is horrible judgment on their part. At least they only destroyed their own vehicle, and didn't spin out, putting others at even more risk.

If I were in Houston, I'd drive on a flat tire too, but I'd get off the freeway and certainly not go that fast. Houston's freeway vehicle tow laws are (IMO) pretty insane.

It has always amazed me how the non-auto enthusiast (those who consider a car simply transportation) don't realize that they have to care to their vehicle like they do their house..or any other long term investment. It is just upsetting that they are usually judgmental about those of us who chose to take care of our things, viewing it as a "waste of money"

i agree too. and then they complain about expensive repairs when their car has to go into the shop. Just keep up with normal maintenance and your car will last you for a very long time. *usually* lol

ive seen the same car on 45N for 3 days now on the right shoulder. i dunno how a wrecker hasnt just towed that POS. its obvious the owner doesnt give a crap about it
