Well I thought I'd share my ever-evolving project. Bought it off of tech in '06. All I wanted was a car that had a good rear end underneath of it. The one that caught my eye also happened to have an iron block 408 with stock heads on it. The owner advertised that it made 466 rwhp and similar torque (can't remember the number).
I got the car and daily drove it for about 6 months. At some point, I got it on the dyno and it made a whopping 408 rwhp. I was pissed. It was speed density tuned at the time. I put the MAF back online and had my tuner go through it. It ended up making 432/432. What the previous owner didn't tell me was that it made those numbers through a 10 bolt. I also had a heavy twin disc clutch assembly in there to soak up a few more horsepower. On street tires, it went 12.1 at 120 with a 2.08 60'. Now it was time to mod.
Threw a set of AFR 225s on it, a Vengeance ported FAST intake, Patrick G nitrous ground cam (244/255 621/595 114+2), and ARH 1 7/8'' longtubes. It made 514/497 then with the cutouts open on the ARH Y. It made 497/485 with the cutouts closed. The SLP dual dual really sucks.
I added the ASP underdrive and Thunder Racing ported maf ends next and it made 510/495 with the cutouts closed. I was really excited at what it could make based on how much it picked up before opening the cutouts. The next pull, my T56 committed suicide. Some of the needle bearings in the U-joints let go, causing the driveshaft to wobble and it broke the tailshaft badly. I had always told myself that if my T56 gave up, I was going automatic. So I did.
Ordered a Performabuilt 4l80e and their billet 4k stall, along with a Rossler transbrake. Upon install, one of the flywheel bolts was too long and damaged the converter. This was at the end of the season, and my tuner (and good friend) lent me the TH350 out of his race car. It, with a 3500 stall yielded a 10.60 pass at 128 mph with a 1.54 short time in 35 degree weather. I was very pleased as my car is full weight and then some.
Fast forward to now, it's time for another big round of mods. The 4l80e will be in for good within the next two weeks. I'm going back to true duals, got rid of the C6 Z06's in favor of Pro Stars all the time. I've got an NOS direct port kit with an NOS progressive controller, and a HSW all out accessory pack to make sure everything stays safe. I will more than likely be adding a dedicated fuel system before long as well, as I'll be spraying a big 300 hit when it's all said and done. The plan is to go 9s this year, wish me luck!
