View Full Version : Another 69 Camaro Project

I picked up another future project car. I say future because I won't get started on this one for several months. I bought it from a long-time buddy that goes back to the LS1.com days, he had grown bored with the Camaro because it sat so long without being drivable. I've been casually shopping for a clean 69 coupe body, because I want to build a black painted car (I've always wanted a black 69 coupe). We are pretty sure this one has all of the original body panels, they are very straight and show no signs of repairs or bondo. The car has no rust on it. The only negative is the vinyl roof. Some love them, I do not. It will be removed and painted eventually.
So, I have a lot of dismantling to do with this one. I'm going to strip it down and sell everything off of it that I don't plan on using. My goal for the car long term is to build it into a 1,000+ rwhp LSX powered twin-turbo car. Right now it has a healthy SBC with some nice goodies on it (Patriot aluminum heads, Edelbrock Air Gap intake, Holley carb, roller rockers, cam, longtube headers, etc...). All of that will be removed and sold. The wheels/tires will also be sold (18" Torque-Thrust 2 Classics, 2-piece). Most of the interior will go too (standard black interior). I basically want the shell here, to start over with.
The current paint is a very nice driver quality, a factory color from 1969 called "Dusk Blue". I may roll with the color for a while, but eventually it will be painted black. The original color is code 59 Frost Green with the black roof. Originally a base model V8 car. It has the 10-bolt and monoleafs under it.

Nice! I've never seen that color before, so it's darker than Lemans blue... Would you know if Dusk Blue was also available on Chevelles?

I like the vinyl roof. Are you going to build the kit yourself? If so I would buy the stainless works headers, mine took me about 25 hours to build. All you need is a Shearer fabrication power steering relocation bracket if your going to use Ls1 style accessories.
Are you looking to go way over 1000 or stop there? A 427 or 440 with some comp turbos mounted in a unique way would be sweet.

I'm thinking about a similar wheel for my Nova. But that is at least 8-10 months away.

Definitely not a common color. I've only seen 3 painted this color in person, total. Too bad it isn't the original color. Here are the 69 colors:

All undecided for now. Honestly, I'd like to fab and build this entire car myself, including paint. It won't get done in a hurry, I want things to be done right.

It is a damn clean car. Let me know when you part out the steering wheel, would look good in the C10.

Good score Tony. Didn't that thing spend months in your shop already?? :)
Who knows....maybe I'll buy that SBC for a transplant. Any idea when you'll be pulling it?

We can pull it this weekend.
Joel, the car was running/driving until they decided to do a tranny swap from the 2-spd Powerglide to the current M21 4-spd. Didn't have all the parts to complete the swap. Car has aftermarket disk brakes, but the lines were never installed. Minor things, he just didn't have much free time to mess with it. The engine top end has no miles on the road, it was done while the car was dismantled.

I didn't remember it being a 4 speed. That perks up my interest in throwing it in the monte even more.
I have a likely boat purchase going down this weekend. After that, I have 2 vehicles begging for a shop day at the Ball residence. Weather has been awesome lately.
Are you able to get it to nifty 50's this weekend or is it too far away from seeing the road? I think greenie might finally make an appearance.

I won't be driving this '69. Just parting it out ASAP. Niftees might be an idea in the Chevelle though.

I love the color, and the whole look of it currently. Not a huge fan of the vinyl tops, but this looks liveable to my eyes.

How nice is the paint and the vinyl roof?

Paint is an excellent driver quality job. Could use some more clearcoat layers to be excellent. Vinyl roof is excellent. The car was restored less than 5 yrs ago, by the previous owner to the guy I bought it from.

Great find. Looks like a clean car.
Are you doing the DSE front sub frame and Quadra link as well? Keep us posted on this one Tony. I want to build a '69 Camaro pro-tour so bad, I can taste it!
Good luck and have fun man.:woot:

It will get mini-tubs, but I'm not sold on the QL for the power I plan to put down. I don't really plan on making this some road course monster, mostly a straight line (standing mile, drag racing, roll racing) monster. In my opinion, aftermarket subframes are fancy but not really necessary. Modified stock subframes have shown to work equally well. If I do anything up front, it would be to reduce weight. Not all aftermarket subs reduce weight.

Would C6 IRS be something worth looking into? I thought I had found a company that made front and rear subframes for Camaros and Nova but I can't remember the name.
They were costly, around 7k each but very clean. I'm thinking Hot Rod had an article that showed about 10 different companies that made the bolt in kits.

Nice!!! I like that color on there. Unique. The vinyl roof doesn't look bad on that car but your right that some cars look like crap with that on there. Any sharp, bright color doesn't look right with a vinyl roof.
Can't wait to check it out in person.

Did you snap these pics with your Sony cam?
Nine Ball

Yes, Sony cam.
Sluggish, you couldn't pay me to put an IRS axle in this car. I want to be able to launch with the wheels in the air, just like the last one I built. haha.

That makes sense for what you plan to use the car for. I should have guessed that was the plan when you posted "twin turbo". That car will definitely be a monster! Definitely do the mintubs, as you stated to help with traction. Will you be using any carbon fiber parts?
Keep us posted man!

I hate to ask this Tony, and I probably wont get an answer but what does a Clean 69 go for down in Tx... My father just bought a similar car (68' though) at Hershey this week and paid close to 20K...

Running/driving, this blue one in this condition would be a $22-24K car. The body on this one is much cleaner/straighter than most I've seen under $25K though.

I mentioned to Trevor @ LSX Shootout that you got this car, and he said to let him know when you want to sell it, I told him naw I bet Tony holds on this one for at least a year and a half. :)
