View Full Version : The car I've owned the longest duration.

As some of you know, I have had tendencies to sell cars often and buy them even more often. I have this habit of modifying and customizing a vehicle, only to move on to something new afterward.

This 1969 Camaro SS is actually the longest duration car I've ever owned. I've had it since 2005. It is also the least driven, since I can't enjoy it on the highway with its loud exhaust, 4-spd manual, and 4.30 gears. It is super loud at highway cruising speeds. 1-chamber Flowmasters, LOL. The car is a true SS, X55 code, and an actual hugger orange code 72 car. It doesn't have the original engine, it currently has a GM 300 hp H.O. crate engine in it.

Long term plans for the car include a rotisserie restoration of the body and undercarriage. Then I'll install either an LS3 or LS7 with a T56 in it, air conditioning, better disk brakes. It will remain a classic looking car, with retro style wheels. I want it as a very nice cruiser, not a showcar.

Anyways, it was collecting dust in the shop, living under its car cover. Trevor at Texas Speed wanted the 18" wheels off of it, so I washed her up and took some photos. Here it is, with the 18s and with the OEM 14s. I like the factory style wheels a little better on this car.

Until you get the engine swap, I'd stick with the stockers. The car looks great.

I was going to ask if it was your Dodge truck. LOL

Nah, Dodge came in 2008. After I got rid of the 2008 Duramax.

I do love that car. Agree, I kinda like it with the stockers. Looks clean and classic. I say stock LS3 swap, T56 and some AC. DRIVE this car. Rotisserie restoration after a while but I think that will just make you want to drive it less. As is the car is pretty good "driver" condition.

Be a nice vert for the fall/spring weather!

And CLOTH seats!!!

Just throw in those houndstooth Arizen seats you have. Those would compliment it nicely!

Unless...You want to sell those :)

Nine Ball

The Arizens are definitely for this car. I hate the factory seats with a passion!

Trevor is a wheel fiend, you should see the wheel collection that is NOT on cars.

Nice timing on post, the DPE wheels showed up about an hour ago! :D

I have to agree, I'm not sure I'd want to do a rotisserie restoration. Save the money and make it a great driver, an LS3 will make plenty of power and make the car a blast to drive.

Of course if I had the money I'd build a 1st gen just like your supercharged LS6 '69. In my opinion that was the best way to build a first gen.

Yes, I still want to build another 69 coupe with high power. Maybe 1,000 rwhp via turbo. Black with white stripes, pro-touring style.

Joseph, get some pics of the DPE's on the car he is putting them on. I'm curious.

Yeah man. Just drive the car. Do an engine, trans (6-speed for sure) then you can drop from the 4.30 to like 3.73 or 4.11's and do better. Just make it a drivers car. Nothing more. It's the perfect car for a Bolt-on Restro-mod.

If you still have one of those 3 or 4 LS3 crate engines (I can't remember how many you had when I bought the GTO) throw one in and have fun. I MAY even tinker with the idea of selling you my Larry Meaux heads for that engine if you do it. I haven't found the time to use those heads since I got the stupid engine going like 3 years ago.

(Note to self, Please let Erik have my engine done so I don't have to kick his nuts thru the top of his head this time back)

Yeah I had a 69 z/28 back in 94-00, the factory seats really blow.

Given the temps there, I'm sure AC is a necessity.

Purty car, I had two 1st gens back between 92-00.

NOW you're talking Tony!! That will be killer.
Do you still have the Chevelle as well?

nice looking car... one of these days I'll build up a classic.

When you get around to doing the resto and build up please keep the no console look. I think the first gen consoles look terrible. The shifter sitting by itself between classic style buckets looks so much cleaner.

Yeah, I don't like the 69 console much, except when they have the gauges. Tones, yes I still have the '70 Chevelle too. That one gets driven maybe 5 times a year, it rides nice and smooth and has those factory couches to sit on. Still needs A/C though. I have a GM ZZ502 aluminum head BBC crate engine and LT1 T56 to put in that car.

Lets do it already! I have some vacation time and a desire to work on a car when I get back. I say lets pick a nice cool weekend/week and drop that sucker in!

Putting a 502 into a Chevelle is probably harder than getting an LT1 out of a Camaro!

Nine Ball
08-26-2010, 04:21 PM
eeeewwww....you said LT1.

will69camaro
08-26-2010, 04:27 PM
True, but 502 in a chevelle >> LT1 anything anywhere anytime.....

I am looking forward to starting on my car also. Planning on ways to spend the 7-8 weeks of vacation I have!!!

I think it's pretty hard to beat LT1 out of the car, out of the garage, and hundreds of miles away.

will69camaro
08-26-2010, 08:02 PM
That is true. Also the added benefit of + in pocket. If he still wants it. If not I'm sure we can find an industrial sized dumpster somewhere in the neighborhood.

Very cool Tony.:thumb: I remember you telling me that. That is a great looking car. For me, it's either a '69 Camaro or '70 Chevelle.

I wouldn't say great looking. Also to give you an idea, that pic was taken when I was a senior in high school. That was about 9 years ago...

Car is much more faded now. Needs to ditch the yellow w/ black "mustang" stripes in lieu of the original hugger orange!

Hugger Orange = ***!!
How does it drive and handle?

will69camaro

It doesn't drive right now, think the opti is out (stock opti from 94) and I dont feel like putting time/effort into a LT1 anymore. It drove fine, prob high 13 sec car when it ran. Handled like any stock suspension 1969 camaro would.

Will has been working stupid hours due to BP lately, hasn't done much with cars since those weeks prior to Power Tour.

Pretty much Tony nailed it. I've been working on BP stuff since June. I'm offshore currently with no immediate plans for returning. I do plan to take some vacation when I return to work on toys/relax. Hoping to take 15-20 days off before end of the year.

There have been plans to upgrade this car since 2005...Time and money isn't the problem as much as having them both at the same time....

A mild LS7 with the 6 speed would be awesome, my 89 has 4.30 gears with the carbed 6.0 and T56 and it does well as it is with a carb due to the double over drive, and i am sure you will go EFI making it even more economical, would be bad ass to see a car that looks all original exterior and then modern C6 Z06 under the hood.

It hasn't been 13 years of inactivity...Just the last 6 or so. Most of which was either Engineering school or work. I'm already planning on making some time for this car when I get back :)

I like the stock wheels myself. I know the feeling when it comes to driving on the freeway, I have a similar setup with 410's and its a killer.
