Power in the Old World: The Ford Focus RS 500 has 345 hp and stylish black finishings. (http://www.autoweek.com/article/20100329/carnews/100329878/car-pictures&template=photo)

We've been clamoring for the European Ford (http://www.autoweek.com/article/20100329/CARNEWS/100329878#) Focus, and the Blue Oval finally acquiesced. But no matter how hard we beg, the most sinister Focus in the world isn't coming to the United States.

But that doesn't stop us from drooling all over the RS500, which broke cover on Monday, packing 345 hp and 339 lb-ft of torque. The car gets a matte-black “foil” paint job and sharp 19-inch wheelshttp://images.intellitxt.com/ast/adTypes/2_bing.gif (http://www.autoweek.com/article/20100329/CARNEWS/100329878#). Twenty European markets will get to divide the limited run of 500 cars, which will be individually numbered. The speed demon launches in May.

Power comes from a 2.5-liter, five-cylinder engine designed to deliver more top- and mid-range power. There's also a larger intercooler, an exhaust pipe and updated engine-software calibration. The front-wheel-drive car can hit 62 mph in 5.6 seconds.

The matte black finish and 19-inch alloy wheels signal the potent performance of the Ford Focus RS500.

Ford engineers and race-car drivers put the RS500 through the equivalent of 10 consecutive 24-hour races on the Nürburgring's famed Nordschleife and say an eight-minute lap is within reach.

There also is matte-black body work, metallic wheels and glossy finishing for the trapezoidal lower front grille, splitter and rear spoiler. Red calipers and blue and red badges break up the mostly dark demeanor. Inside is a console plaque and red stitching on the steering wheel, door trim and floor mats (http://www.autoweek.com/article/20100329/CARNEWS/100329878#). Red Recaro leather sport seats are optional. Bluetooth, a six-CD audio player, key-free start, automatic headlights and rain-sensing wipers are standard.

Your best chance to get an RS500? Move to Britain, which gets 101 copies of the allotment.

“From its stunning looks to its intoxicating performance, we have no doubt that the RS500 will be appreciated and quickly snapped up by performance car enthusiasts,” Joe Bakaj, Ford of Europe's vice president for product development, said in a statement.

Something that is coming here:In other Ford news, the company announced on Monday it is starting production of its new dual-clutch automatic transmission for the 2011 Ford Fiesta. Called PowerShift, the gearbox is being built through a joint venture with Getrag in Mexico. The six-speed transmission will help the Fiesta get at least 40 mpg on the highway.

People complain about that car not coming to America, but I don't see Americans paying $35k+ for a ford focus.

With that said, it is one hell of a sharp car and is probably a blast to drive around a twisty track.

That's pretty cool, if you want anything similar in power/noise. The Volvo S60R is where the Focus RS got it's engine from, and those are some pretty neat little cars. I wonder if I could swap one of those into a stateside focus? hmmmm

If they kept the weight to 2900lbs or less, it will be a quick little car. Not a fan of the rear wing...

I keep hearing this excuse, but at a run of only 500, I'm sure they could find people to buy it, probably even at ridiculous dealer markups.

Pretty sporty looking. Not a fan of the rear wing.

Agree. There are enough people in import crowd that they would want an american car that would compete in the hot hatchback scene. The Neon S__R__T 4 sold well to people who want that type of car.
