How fast do you have to be going for the wing to come up? So was he hauling too? Or can you have the wing come up at just 55-65mph?

I call bullshit. He was driving recklessly. The turn signal lever is worth 10k pounds, that car MUST have bluetooth and someone with s veyron must have a phone capable of bluetooth. He was just trying not to get into trouble. Also, im pretty sure it was over 100 mph for the wing to rise...

I guess he had read this article:
http://www.caranddriver.com/reviews/car/05q4/bugatti_veyron_16.4-first_drive_review/ultimate_velocity_page_4
When you lift off the throttle at 253 mph, the aerodynamic drag alone slows the Veyron at 0.3 g. After running that fast, dropping below 200 suddenly seems utterly effortless. You could not only hold a cell-phone conversation at 185 but also dial a cell phone at that pace. Allocate some money to keep an attorney on retainer if you get one of these cars, because double and triple the speed limit will quickly feel comfortable and normal.

Texas man takes Bugatti Veyron for a swim
By JAKE LINGEMAN (http://www.autoweek.com/apps/pbcs.dll/personalia?ID=&category=contact)
http://www.autoweek.com/storyimage/CW/20091113/CARNEWS/911139995/veyron.jpg?ref=AR&maxw=340
A Bugatti Veyron driver in Texas said a low-flying pelican caused him swerve off the road and into a lagoon.
What do you get when you mix the fastest production car in the world and a distracted driver? A waterlogged Bugatti Veyron.
A driver in Le Marque, Texas, was taking his 16-cylinder, 250-hp supercar for a drive on the back roads. The driver told police that a pelican flew low in front of him.
The man, who refused to be named, according to the Galveston County Daily News, said he jerked the wheel and dropped his cell phone. When he tried to recover, the left front tire hit some mud, and the Veyron slid into a lagoon.
The Veyron gurgled like an outboard motor in the two-foot lagoon for 15 minutes before finally succumbing to the saltwater.
The Veyron had to be dragged out from the water. The Galveston paper shot video of the removal, which you can watch it here:

insurance would have to prove that he intentionally wrecked the car to deny it. that would be hard. the video shows he's not speeding or driving in such a way that any reasonable person would expect to wreck - my guess is the camera guy is involved.
so he'll have the insurance company total it out, he buys it back and sells it as a rebuilt salvage vehicle. sounds like a pretty bullet proof scam. maybe he's done it before.
Flaring Afro
11-14-2009, 08:56 AM
idk there wasnt a pelican or anything and it did look pretty intentional. there is a chance he wont get the money.... but what insurance company would actually cover a veyron? many of them wont even cover something like a ferrari because of repair/replacement cost and they're a camry in price comparison.
Nine Ball
11-14-2009, 10:33 AM
Insurance companies would cover any car. The premium is just higher. A Veyron is most likely a low risk vehicle, since most are collected/parked anyways. Less of them being driven means less likely to be wrecked. Insurance on a Honda Civic is higher than my Corvette, simply based on risk factors. More Hondas get stolen and totaled out than Corvettes do.

I would think the Veyron would be insane to insure...but you have a point. I'm looking for a 2008 Mercedes AMG E63 right now to buy....State Farm, who insures 3 of my vehicles gave me a price for 100/300 coverage with all the goodies and its less than my Trans Am (50/100 coverage) by $300 per year. I pay $1,100 a year for my Trans Am.
Strange if you ask me considering what just a simple 10 mph rear-end accident would cost to fix that damn Merc E63, probably $10,000.
Maybe I'll call him and get a quote for a Veyron just out of curiousity. There's like 3 Veyrons in Lauderdale that drive around all the time. Couple F1 McClarens too, I see them regularly.

About this idiot driving this Veyron into the water.
If you get spooked by a big ass Pelican...you're gonna make a sudden move to avoid it, not just keep dricving perfectly normal. That Veyron went right off the road smooth as glass....and with no bird in sight on that video.
He also let it run for 15 minutes......what moron would do that, especially one who is an exotic car enthusiast who is known for rebuilding cars??
Its a "good thing" that water was only 2 feet deep, nice and convenient. What if it was 8 feet deep.
He picked that spot to splash it in, knowing exactly what to expect in damage factor.
An insurance company would deny that claim with that video evidence. Maybe even press charges for insurance fraud.

Tony, this isn't 100% accurate. My wife is an underwriter with State Farm and there are cars they will not cover. I imagine the Veyron could fall into that category depending on the driver and their history, driving record isn't the only thing they look at. Some cars regardless of the history they will not touch.

There is a LARRGE rentention pond behined the place I work ad and they had to string a cable around it why? Because at night it is fairly dark back there and there is a road about 30 feet off the water........ they pulled a Porsche out, BMW, like 8 other cars...... cars were reported stolen..... everyone you ask though thinks it was people no longer wanting to pay for the car and ummmm made them vansih...
On this car.... Can't see the video at work but if I could buy a car for a fraction of the cost, yank everything out, dry it out, replace parts that need replaced, powerwash every thing..... you might be able to make some serious cash even with the salvage title with some cars out there...... I wonder if the engine was runing when it went in..... and I thought a Dixi Chopper engine taking in water while runing was bad haha.... I doubt the turbo's liked it..........
LOL at the salt water........ to bad it was not fresh water..... would be a lot less work haha.
I know a girl who's mom denies or approves insurance claims for State Farm and I would not be suprised if they would not cover a Verynon..... just to much risk.... you can allways find a company that will...... mist cost you like 20k a month though haahaha.

No one needs insurance that buys a veyron. The only reason why they would pay to insure it would be planning fraud. Companies also very often dont cover home built kit cars for obvious reasons. It is a shame people dont drive those veyrons though, it really is made for DD use. Comfy and fully loaded, it was never really a "race" car like many people think. More of a hyper grand tourer. And if you're a collector there are much more rare things out there that cant be replaced while the veyron can be.

No one needs insurance that buys a veyron. No. Just because someone can afford to buy it, doesn't mean they can afford to lose it, or even want to take that much risk.
Insurance often isn't as bad on exotics because racing is excluded from most if not all policies, and most exotics only get driven sparingly in good weather.
