View Full Version : V6 a muscle car?

I have been more involved at our local muscle car club meetings and I am a member of its directive. Recently a guy appeared at our local meeting very much passionate about the club, its car etc... The bad thing was the car itself. Was 1994 Firebird V6...not very good looking either.
We politely told him what the club is all about and how a V6 Firebird is not a consider a muscle car. Guy was not happy to say the least.
Would you consider such a car a muscle car?
The club has a vast array of different cars from a Cobra kit car to modern muscle with a 2008 SRT8 Challenger. From my point of view a Buick Grand National or a TTA are indeed muscle, even if they are a V6.

Sounds like the guy is an enthusiast at least. Maybe his financial situation doesn't allow for him to own anything else at this time.

i guess my 650 RWHP V6 camaro is not a muscle car either... You should rethink your statement....

Nope...I would not rethink my statement since the car in question was a tired regular stock V6, not that one. If it it would have been that one surely the story would have been different. We had a long discussion about this same example in LS1TECH not long ago.

I wouldn't consider the 160hp 3.4 V6 a muscle car engine by any means.
I would though more than welcome him into the group. As stated above he obviously simply does not have the money to have one with a V8. Anyone who can do their part to help the comunity should always be welcome.

I would LOVE to see what a V6 fifth gen would do with a supercharger or turbo attached.
That motor just screams at me for boost (well, ideally a compression drop would help, but...).
I don't consider typical V6 cars as "muscle cars", but if set up right, I'd say it "could" be.

Everyone is entitled to their opinion. I personnally do not disregard someone just because of their engine size. I don't think engine size defines the car. Hell a bolton V6 camaro can take a stock 97 V8 mustang. This has been proven time and time again. The mustang it considered a muscle car. It's all in how you look at it....

I like this post, a lot. I'd rather have a guy in the group that is passionate about "Muscle Cars" whether his wallet allows it or not over a guy with more cash than brains. Money can't buy the passion, and it sounds like this guy has the passion to learn. I say let him in, but definitely make it a case-by-case exception, so every V6 ride doesn't pull up expecting a free pass.

There is already a guy with one V6 Camaro...a very nice clean one with some performance work. Car in reference was badly painted in purple, flat black roof (rattle can spray painted), no exhaust (smoking like hell), a couple of nonsense stickers....We do take this case by case but this one was a no no in our opinion. Later that night we started talking about what was and was not considered "muscle"...so the reason for this post.

There are some turds around here......... they love their cars. just can't afford to fix them up much............
I think your group is a little to serious haha. I have never seen any car club put thought into who they let it or not because of the look of the car...... Nor have I seen any that seems to be as exclusive as yours is haha... There is import crowds around here that V-8 cars are welcome in and vise versa haha and most of the ricers look like turds...

I wouldn't consider any V6 car a muscle car if that is what you are asking. The generally accepted definition of a muscle car is a 2 door powerful V8 car that is affordable to the general public. Obviously "powerful" is relative to the time it was released, but that is a different subject.
If your club is for muscle cars only, that guy doesn't qualify. As a disclaimer I help run a board that is for car enthusiasts so please nobody think I'm pig headed. We have everything from 650WHP Evo's to 865RWHP Vipers. So I'm not bias, just trying to stick to the definition.

Did you at least talk to him about what his plans for the car were, learn anything about him, etc? Considering that it's still a sports car, some merit should be given, regardless of condition. Maybe with acceptance into the club, everyone could have helped him out to get it in great shape.
If I owned a V6 Firebird, I would not seek out a performance car club. I would know that my V6 would pale in comparison to the higher-end models of the same name. I would, however, try and find a Firebird club.

This guy started with the same personal attacks and I decided to erase the LS1TECH thread. If you got issues go somewhere else to resolve them. We have some conversions also...something like "musclefied" cars! People sometimes come up with the craziest swaps. If it is well done it will have my vote for sure. Ive seen this specially in old school Malibus and Chevelles that were straight sixxes originally and owners make SS clone of them.

It's pretty lame that you have to "Report" someone just because they question you haha. You deleted the tech thread because there was a lot of people agreeing with me :)
You don't have to quote me to keep me from deleting it. The mods and admin can pull it back up no matter how many times I edit it or delete it..... that is commom forum knowledge :)
Like we were talking on tech and some of the others were saying it seems the main issue you told him no was because of the looks of his car :) The engine is more or less a scape goat :) Even you said that :) I think you just got mad that everyone reailzed it was the looks of the car and that you thought everyone would agree with you maybe?????
I do agree that a V-6 is not a muscle car but the points I had and the others had you ignoored, sorry it it bothers you when i continue to question things when the person refuses to answer them :).
In the original post you mention nothing about the looks of the car and on tech we found out that the real reason you said no was because the car looked like a turd because you said it after some prying and said a member in your "club" has a V-6 car that is super clean and has some performance work.... so in the end it comes down to it being a turd because you let 6's in.
You even said yourself that you all like to think higley of the other cars........ I then said so it does not matter what the owner thinks of the car, just what others think? You never answerd that... You mention the rattled can pain job........ I said how do you know the car did not look worse and that maybe it was an improvement..... you never answerd that also :)
Lastly if you ask if a V-6 is muscle and say you told him no because it is not muscle then why let the other guy in????? Remember, you said that the V-6 is not muscle...... Sorry, not trying to be a dick, your logic just confuses me.

Also the Novas came in six flavor and SS badging. I have a 1966 Chevy Nova II, hardtop, original straight six, waiting for a resto. I always think of going the resto mod way or just keep it original...guess will know when the time comes!

Drama is fun. Hell, we need the excitement around here sometimes. Please leave personal attacks out, that is all we ask.
Anyways, back on topic. I dislike V6 Camaros and Mustangs. Not that I dislike all V6 engines in general, because I don't. Especially when a certain car only is available in 6 or smaller. I just don't like ponycars/musclecars with 6-cylinders. They are like the diet coke of muscle cars. Even when the V6 is modified, I still would rather have a stock V8 under the hood.
Just my op.

What allways got me is that the (newer) V6 stangs "felt" like they had about the same power as the GT's.......... but the GM 3.8 was night and day difference compared to the LT1 and LS1....... allways something that made me laugh a little...
An Iron duke....... now THAT my friends was a TRUE muscle car engine :D

One of my biggest LOL's on the road is when I see a guy older than 30 rolling in a shiny new V6 ponycar. I'm thinking this guy doesn't have a gearhead bone in his body, or that his wife made him buy the V6 version. I have met a few guys that bought brand new V6 Mustangs and Camaros, with good paying jobs. We didn't mesh well when it came to car talk. During the entire convo's I'm seeing if I can spot any homosexual characteristics in them that I might have missed.

One of my bosses has a 94 Bird...... He really likes it and it is just a fun car to him, does not race it or anything...
Another guy I used to work with had like a 2000 V6 stang..... same story with him.

From what I gather on some "other" sites, their thought processes are they can either get a loaded V6, or a base V8. The ones that choose the V6 simply aren't passionate speed freaks. They will move on to the next "big thing" in a couple years.

I disagree with that statment. There are many people with V6's that are passionate about speed. People choose different platforms for different reason. I built my V6 because i wanted something different. It's a pain in the ass, no doubt, but deffinately different. I guess i would be an odd ball with your logic, except i spend time on a few V6 boards and there are a number of poeple who do it just to be different. If you are referring to CamaroV6.com, then I would say many people are either like yourself [wanting to do something different], or the V6 is what they got and want to make the best of it. You are certainly the exception rather than the rule.
I know I made quite the generalization, but I am mostly referring to 5th gen V6 owners. At this point, previous-gen V8's are so cheap and plentiful, there isn't much reason to not pick one up.

Generally, 6 bangers are not muscle cars. GNs, TTAs, and cars like Linxs' get amnesty though.

Camarov6/firebirdv6 is a shithole.
I don't think I'd consider a powerful v6 a 'pure' muscle car, just more of an evolution of the muscle car.
Muscle car or not, there is no reason to hate on people that are just as much of a car enthusiast as you are, but enjoy using a different means to slake their thirst other than the 'obviously really fast v8 musclecar'.

There sure are some toolish ideas being tossed around in this thread. Just because I don't own a V8 or can't afford one makes me not a gearhead? But if its painted nice and really nice looking but has a V6 or for god sakes even a 4cyl it makes it OK in everyone else's eyes? When you build or buy a car your doing it to your tastes. What if the guy liked the flat black rattle can paint, and his no exhaust? That makes him not a gearhead or a musclecar owner? I bet you wouldn't say that to half the rat-rod community...

Of course a well taken care of car is always good in everybody elses eyes, rat rods are another car trend which I happen to like too. They have their own thing, we have our own thing. Thats a VERY weak argument.
In the end is OUR club, we are happy about it, its a great group of guys and gals and most importantly it is NOT the subject of this thread. I would be grateful if a mod would lock or delete this thread, it has lost its original purpose and has become a useless rant of attention whores and morons with self created feelings of inadequacy.
Thanks in advance.

Seems the OP is a little scorned to see that the world is bigger than his car club. Too bad some ppl are so short minded as to yourself to go to personal attacks after one post. Reading Comprehension? I think I read 6 pages of your toolish nonsense and garbage just to get my point across. I have wasted enough time already with this post. And you are right, it is your club that I would want nothing to do with even if I personally knew you were kinder hearted than this self proclaiming asshole you make yourself out to be on the net.

Waiting for you to quote where I said what you claim I did. Quite simple really. If you cannot quote it then all my post still stands. Waiting....

I've taken a look back and you did never say that but your reason and logic points straight towards it being your #1 reason for this guy and his car to not be eligible for your club.

Weren't you the one who first complained about the personal attacks? Seems like you are throwing the pitches in this game now.
I can't believe you guys are arguing over silly 6-cylinder shitboxes. :jest:

Easy on the 6 bangers.... my first car was an 86 Camaro with a 2.8 that I did some work to..... it was a BEAST :D

I wonder how you can "look" at a thread and not understanding what it was said.
Here it is. Now carefully read and see why the kid was "rejected". Funny, guy came back with his Mustang last Friday. He will keep coming back because we dig the car....So now you can take whatever argument you have left...print it and use your imagination.
I would love to see what the JUICE dude continues to post but I have a feeling is nothing more that butt kissing at his finest!:kissass: Good for you!:thumb:

Let me clarify. V6 Camaros and Firebirds are shitboxes. Those are the margarine of musclecars.

Same here none thrown but I think I knocked a few thrown at me around the park.
Hey I DD a 4 banger but its not whats under the hood of the car, its whats under the hood of the driver. Hence my screen name Fbodyjunkie. I do not own a f-body with a V8 but I am a junkie to 8 cyl F bodys. Its quite simple really some are just very single minded I guess. And the butt kissing comment was just well:thinker::toilet::thumbsdown:

V6 Camaros and Firebirds, except for the 20th Anniversary cars, are shitboxes. End of story. Can they be made into fast shitboxes, sure, but so can a Honda Civic.

Wow, thanks for the great read guys.
This has been a debate for many many many years and will be a debate for long to come. Anyway Juiced and Chaman both have points, but it seams that Chaman can't take a little sarcasm. I can't speak for NINEBALL, ANDREW, or any of the other mods on here but THEY ARE NOT THE PRINCIPALS OF PLANET. They are here to keep the peace, not be your personal “MOMMY HE IS TOUCHING ME” … Asking a MOD to scold Juiced for expressing his opinion is just the same as telling a teacher on the kid running in the hall... Jesus, relax.
Anyway here is my opinion. We have a car club, we call ourselves “ car club”, we hang out at my house, Dunkin donuts, and Burger King. We have everything from Vettes, to street rods, to people that don’t even have a car right now. I think that it’s more of a persona than “WHAT YOU DRIVE” I have a Camaro, it’s on jack stands getting built, so when I go I take my 04 RAM, or ride with a buddy. There is no reason a shit box V6 Camaro can’t Join our club, the hope is that with time, he will come to understand more about cars and we can help point in the direction of a real muscle car. That’s what a car club is to me…

He PM'd me pretty much telling me he was tired of my crap and was reporting me to the mods.... I told him that was cool and that John and Tony can tell him that I have said far harsher things to them over a few fiasco's in the past. They let me make my argument and that was it, I was happy. This guy just likes to throw the crap and I find that funny because I don't recal making any personal attacts to him, just his way or thinking.... I think he got mad because me and a few others really shot holes in his way of thinking on tech so much that he deleted the thread..
My first car was an 86 Camaro with a fuel injected 2.8 in it... a lot of people made fun of it but it is what got me into cars..... my last car had enough power that even the haters from back in the day could not touch me and at a car show they would have lost badly :D
It's like the ugly girls in school...... be nice to them because in a few years they might be smoking or be wife material..... same thing with cars....

This is exactly my point I was trying to get across to him that he was being pretty short minded to this guy and not seeing the bigger pay it foward picture this hobby is all about. I wonder what his first car was and how it was painted and how it ran? For all chaman knows thats what this dude was working with. Thats what I was pointing out and I get blamed for nutswinging. :stars:
But back to the point in bold you are right on my friend, sounds like my kinda club:drinkingbuddies:

Muscle car means American V8 RWD. Period. Coincidently though, I would let the guy hang out with the club.
