View Full Version : Gah... 'Vette or New Camaro?

Normally, I wouldn't make posts like this, but since it's a new site, I figure, "what the hay."

I've always wanted a 'Vette. I like the C6 with the LS3, but my first love is the C5 Coupe. The Z06/Z51's abbreviated back glass just really doesn't do it for me, and for me it would be a street car.

Trouble is, I'm ultra picky. I HAD to have a white/white leather/Z28/M6/Y3F, AND it HAD to be a '99. Now, that's picky. I would have no other car. There were only 777 Camaros of any kind that had white leather, so I knew I was up against. I found my car after about two years of searching.

So, if I get a C5, it HAS to be black with red and black interior, M6, Coupe. The newer the better.

However, they do not offer the color combination that I need for a new Camaro. That's why I didn't buy one.

It HAS to be white, with either red or white interior, and red stripes. Orange is close enough (I guess...) for the interior and stripes. However, there is no white yet.

So, anyone else in the "'Vette or new Camaro" boat? :)

in all seriousness....

there was someone that posted on the other site, that just decided to p/u a new vette rather than wait for the camaro. I would say go with the vette...but thats my opinion.

I'm gonna have to say camaro....but a vette seems too "sporty" for me

Corvettes are in a whole different league of car entirely... I think a Corvette is a car that everyone should own atleast once in their life. But for the record, there are plenty of Z51 C5s that are targa tops. I think you mistakenly referred to all FRCs (Fixed Roof Coupes) as Z51s. My mom has a Millenium Yellow/Black '01 6spd Z51 Targa that I thoroughly enjoy driving as much as possible :).

Have you seen a new Camaro up close? I sat in one at the Houston Auto Show and I was not impressed. I know Camaros are muscle cars, and as such, they aren't meant to have all the fit and finish of a Corvette, but that car just felt really cheap and flimsy, IMO. The interior pieces just didn't fit well together, and it felt clunky.

I hope it was just because it was a pre-production model, and they will get the QC issues worked out in production, but if it were me, I'd get a Corvette.

Which is probably why I'm buying one.

I would definitely get a 'vette. Hell I was going to trade my Camaro for a C5Z06 after my last deployment and mod the hell out of it, but my wife made me keep the Camaro. She says I can have one when Im old like everyone else around here.

Vette.
Weight advantage, better handling.
They are sort of timeless. The new Camaro will be hot as soon as it rolls out, but it will die down.
The Vette will always be a Vette

After some soul searching, I cancelled my Camaro ordered a couple of weeks ago. I thought about what I really like, and I really like going fast. I like drag racing. I like light. So a C6 or a C5Z really makes sense for me. The cars are 3200 lbs or less without driver, compared to the estimated 3850 for the Camaro. Don't get me wrong, maybe I'll have a new Camaro some day, I'm not closing the door. But when a G8 is not that much heavier, in my situation I'd probably buy the four door since it would be a little more practical for work, and I could take my boys in it (both have to be in car seats).

I would have to go with Vette. I like the new Camaro but the interior just hasnt done it for me yet, maybe when i drive one it will. I love the C6's, well, everything. Driving position, feel, looks, love it all.

PS. Im from Vincennes. I dont think i have ever seen a white/white leather z28 around here. You come over much?

If that was the same one as the Dallas Auto Show, it was a base model V6 car. They wouldn't let you sit in the SS model, but it looked a lot nicer. As for the decision, I recently sold my vette and if this f'in economy would cooperate, I'm getting a new Camaro. Reason is, I've got two little girls now and the vette just wasn't practical. I definitely loved that car, but I had to sacrifice for the time being. I do plan to be back in a vette at some point, hopefully a C6Z.

Maybe GM will change for the 5th gen, but traditionally, the interiors between the V6 and the upscale models are the same, with the exception of leather. The seats didn't bother me, but the interior panels just seemed cheap to me.

yeah i am in the same boat as the OP, i just sold my 98z28 last night & 99 ss about a month ago....i still have to get rid of my harley, but after alot of hard thinking i am not going to get a new camaro ss.......

you just cant beat the deals on the c6z right now,i have my eye on a 07 AO with 9000 miles for $45.000 but really want silver.......

pro stock john is right about the weight difference between the two....& i didnt care for the interior in the new camaro......

i will pull the trigger right now on the right c6z,i want silver & chrome rims....anybody out there have one or see one for under $50k pm me please.

Depends on what your looking to do with it. if you have kids and want to take them anywhere then the vette isnt practical . I have a 1 1/2 year old and take her lots of places in my car and she loves it which i couldnt do if i owned a 2 seater. Now if i had another car to drive around it would prob be a diffrent story but i love the fact of having a back seat. I would love to have a new camaro or a new g8 or a new c6 vette but my wallet doesnt agree with me LOL. I wish they didnt have irs solid axle ***

I've got a 2006 TBSS, and I've gone 13.84 stock in it. Hopefully with very minimal bolt-ons and a tune I've got a 13.3 truck here. It's quite the family hauler. :)

We actually have two suv's, the family hauler is an Acura MDX. But I won't trade in the Tibber because I'm sure they offer crappy money for it.

I never realized how light the C6's were until I did some research.

I would like to have a tbss for the a dd ! I would prob get the vette if i was in your same situation .You cant go wrong with the weight to hp ratio and just plain fun factor of a c6. I would love to have the new maro too but kinda would want to wait and see how everything goes with that car since it is so new.

I got the chance to drive a 2010 Camaro SS just over a month ago (a friend is a GM executive) and I must say it's an extremely nice car! It's put together very well, it does not feel cheap at all. But like PSJ said, it's a heavy bugger! You definitely feel that weight. I made a couple of full throttle runs and the acceleration feels about the same as a stock LS1 f-body to me.

IMO, the much lighter C6 is the better deal, even if it's about $10 or $15k more. (not sure on the exact difference in pricing in the US)

theres a reason why gm sells the corvette for more. its a better car. thats a fact. now as far as looks thats another story. but personally i like the low, wide, exotic look, and the c6 delivers. none of the new sport (muscle) cars do. rx8, cobalt, 350z, they are all high and dont have an aerodynamic look. thats just my .02

Vette. No contest.

Have you seen the prices on C5 and C6 Z06s? Dropping like rocks.

Even LS1 vettes are dipping into the 13's these days. Add a SC kit from AA or ECS for about $8k including tuning. 500rwhp (LS1) or 530rwhp (LS6) in a 3200 or 3100 lb car. No smog or driveability worries. Done. :)

Gotta give it to the vette. More money to mod after initial purchase. And the lighter platform to start with.

I'm still torn. Fortunately, I have some time to sort out what I really want, since I still need to pay off some debt. I'm holding out hope that GM does a Z28 Camaro. If they don't, I'll probably opt for an LS3 Z51 C6 or a C6Z, depending on price, etc. I'll be waiting patiently until the announcement is made, one way or another, as a limited run Z28 would be my first choice. The weight won't bother me, since I'm not much of a racer.

It will spank the Mustang and Challenger.

I am really disappointed that it isn't further ahead of the 370z and 135i though, especially in the handling department. .90g is a little disappointing.

Well the 370Z is a sports car, and they both weigh considerably less... the handling difference isn't surprising.

A Pony-car. A GT, if you'd like. A car's performance is not the deciding factor as to whether it is considered a "sports car."

I'm fairly sure he knows that... he was talking more about a realistic power goal for both cars, and the performance it would yield.
