Hey guys looking to slowly get into some photography, probably start with a point and shoot first, then go from there. All I have is my camera phone right now, so anything is an upgrade. Any recommendations on which brands or models you guys are using?

For a point and shoot you really can't beat the Canon Powershot lineup. The SD1100 I believe is a fairly popular choice and I've heard a lot of great reviews. I've used the SD1000 which is very similar and it was really nice for a point and shoot.

I'd just bite the bullet and get an entry-level DSLR. I'm not sure what your budget is, or how serious you want to get, but I know I bought a P+S and upgraded within 6 months.

A used Canon xti and kit lens or 50mm prime can be had for about $400 or less methinks. You can also get that all back if you decide to sell or don't enjoy it. Try getting your investment back from a P+S...

Yeah I might end up getting a DSLR, we'll see.
What do you guys think about this one for a point and shoot though

Just read up on consumer-digest-style reviews to make sure you get the features you want. Any modern P+S will do a decent job for a beginner if that's what fits the budget.

+1 i just bought a Canon powershot SD770 IS last month and love it, its 10 megapixels, the video mode is good for what it is, it has good battery life and is very small and compact

Megapixels is only one of a LOT of variables that come into play when considering camera gear. If you start to enjoy it, a P+S will never get you the image quality you're after while a DSLR will allow you to build and upgrade in chunks. Expensive chunks, but searching for used gear helps a lot.

A DSLR will typically have:
1. higher image quality dot for dot
2. a choice of lenses, versus a P+S "you get what you get, and you don't throw a fit"
3. faster shutter-to-picture time. P+S are notoriously slow, VERY tough to catch thing in action
4. better resale value
5. more creative control
etc. etc.

Buy a used lower end body, buy an inexpensive kit lens, and for a similar price to your P+S options you have a nice higher quality setup to build upon. Before long, you're spending 3 grand on new gear :bang: :jest:

 That's funny right there.

And don't tell him about the cash that comes later! You trying to scare him off forever? :dark:

Thanks for all the suggestions guys, but I think a dSLR is probably out of my price range for now. Went to best buy today and played with a few different models. I like the Canon SD790, and I feel it's a great price for the camera. Not really looking to pour money into this hobby just yet, so I think this may be the best fit for now.

That's what I started on! Good camera, but it really made me want to get an SLR, and it wasn't long before I did.

Thanks guys, so far the camera is great. I think it's a good starting camera, and the price can't be beat. I'm sure I'll eventually upgrade to a dSLR, but this will hold me over for now.
