I'm going to try and be as brief as possible, because this car has had a LOT done to it in the 2 years i've owned it....and then on to the pictures...

I bought it with ~24K miles on it 2 years ago, with Speed Inc.'s SI5 cam and bolt-ons. It was making 393rwhp. First mods i did were a Moser 9" with 4.11's, locker and 35 spline axles and a Textralia OZ700 clutch. Then i bolted on a FAST 90mm intake/TB that i ported myself, bringing the power up to 417rwhp.

After that got old, i picked up a set of PRC Stg. 2.5 5.3 heads and had it retuned to make 452rwhp. Then i sent my T56 to Tick Performance for their Level 3 Extreme Viper package. About 3 weeks after i got the badass new tranny back in, I had a couple rod bolts stretch, two rod bearings spun, and the motor seized up....here's a few pics showing this whole process:

Day i got it home:

Clutch and 9" install:

New FAST 90/90 & homemade coil relocation done

On the Dyno with the new FAST, clutch, and 9" making 417/383

The new PRC Stg. 2.5 5.3 heads

Tearing it up for the head swap
http://i53.photobucket.com/albums/g50/freeman_nasty/IMG_0018-1.jpg

Head swap done and the FAST got re-painted to better match the car. I had first had a rattle can mixed up, and it looked good, but wasn't a perfect match, so i had the intake painted by a buddy that does auto body

Here it is about to be pulled onto Ed Wright's dyno in Tulsa, Ok. Power landed at 452rwhp/395rwtq

That is a HKE 454 with TEA's TFS 245's, custom cam, Morel Link-bar lifters, Callies Compstar crank and rods, custom Wiesco pistons, and all the trimmin's. Headers are 2" Kooks, UMI supplied ALL of the suspension (front and rear), Tick Performance's adjustable master cylinder will be paired with their tranny.

Wheels i've had: chrome 17" C5 Z06's, 17" TT2's with black centers, polished 17/18" C5 Z06's, 19/20" CCW 505A's, and now finally the wheels i intend on keeping are 18" iForged Aero's.

Fuel system is Nasty's stage 2 street kit for ~600-700rwhp. The new clutch will hopefully be a Textralia ExoSkel. I'm looking into a Harrop Hurrican ITB intake to sit on top, although a 100mm FAST was the original intended intake.

that's about all i can think of at this time, i'm open to any and all suggestion/questions or just listening to you all drool

We have an LS2 and are wanting to bag the stepside and put the LS2 in it and fuel inject it:thumb: Tell your buddy he has a nice ride!

Love the fact that you went with the 454 LSX!! I can imagine how well that car will perform with all the goodies you have lined up. I hear those Harrop intakes are great.

:( i know. i'm 99.999% for sure finishing the car. what i MIGHT do is buy my intake and a couple misc parts AND a cheap bike...that way i can get it going and all i'll lack is a clutch, which i can come up with fairly easily when it is needed. but nonetheless, i intend on getting the car done. Our first local cruise night was saturday night and i had nothing to take :bang:, so that's been eating at me ever since...

Here's a question for you guys, while i have your attention: what should i do about an oil pan? aftermarket LSx pans are $$$$$ and i can't justify spending that kinda money when my stocker will "work." does anyone know of a used or new-unused-but-purchased pan for sale?....like a Canton or Moroso...???

Here's my thinking; Finish the car the way it's supposed to be done with the money, instead of buying a "cheap" dirt bike. My reasoning?? You won't be happy with a "cheap" dirt bike and your car will be complete and you'll be able to SHOW IT OFF @ the local cruise nights and stuff!! Just my 2 cents.
I will be on the lookout for a used oil pan. I belong to a couple of different forums. What kind of oil pan specifically, besides either a Canton or Moroso?

i honestly don't know really what else is out there....anything is fine as long as it's a qulaity part that looks good. i'm going to go ahead and put the stocker on, but the motor won't go in until i have a clutch/intake/misc other stuff, so there's time to swap it out if i need to.

hit me up man, i'm always around. the car is at my buddy's house who has a red twin turbo WS6 :secret:

here's a couple pics...haven't had much time/money to keep making leaps and bounds, but i've been doing some grunt work to keep my hands out of my pants. i stuck the valve covers and headers on. i was going to fit up the oil pan, but realized i must have sold my windage tray/pickup ...so i've got new ones ordered...also put in an order for a BMR Xtreme torque arm...hopefully intake/clutch will be ordered in a few days.

It's my buddy's, the same one who owns the '68 short-wide. he's had the truck at the springfield nat's every year for the last 4 or 5 years, you might have seen it. we usually see your car and/or the 417 guys'. the TA came from florida from a 'tech member. it's an APS kit with a OZ700 and 12-bolt. he just put some black deep-dish Y2K wheels on it and we now have a victor jr, edelbrock elbow, 92mm TB, and a pretty healthy cam for it waiting to go it with 3 or 4 more psi. the car runs 11.6xx's now, and it's full weight and he's a big guy, it oughta move out when all this other stuff gets done.

...and my intake is TBD...

thanks man

i got my new windage tray and pickup tube....turns out ARP main studs are a tad beefier than stock (who knew?) so i had to drill the holes a little bigger. THEN, as expected, the massive crank and rods didn't come close to clearing the tray, so i had to put 7 small washers on each stud to shim it enough, and even now two rod bolts still nick the edge of the tray, but i'm going to do a little reforming on the tray to make it clear.

Looks like i'm just going to keep the stock oil pan, but even after thorough cleaning, i can't get it to look like i want, SO it's going to get powdercoated...probably silver. hopefully i can order my intake this week and maybe the clutch too. once i get a crank pulley and water pump i'll put the motor into the car :)

got a little work done today:

I took my headers to get ceramic coated, and some misc brackets and the oil pan to get powdercoated silver.

I stripped and painted my brake booster gloss black. when it's cured i'll be able to re-run brake lines and get the line lock and ABS delete in.

After fighting for 2 hours, while painting, i got my first and only AN fitting on the end of the fuel hose...talk about a pain in the ass...there's no good way to cut that stuff.

My BMR Xtreme torque arm will be here thursday, so hopefully this weekend i'll get the old one out and the new one in as well as my fuel tank.

2000_SS
05-09-2009, 12:15 PM
parts are still at the powdercoater, he's swamped, but i expect them back by next weekend. I did a little painting on a few small parts. i'm gearing up to get the fuel tank back in and finish the plumbing on it, but im not looking forward to fighting the braided hose and AN fittings

BMR got my new Xtreme torque arm to me in good time, here's a couple shots of what i got:

http://i53.photobucket.com/albums/g50/freeman_nasty/IMG_0176-1.jpg

This thing is BEEFY, 4130 chro-mo, nice looking welds, and comes with clear instructions and an angle finder. It seems to be pretty well worth the ~$660 price tag, pending performance results...but i got it during BMR's 3-day 30% off sale from Byunspeed for $462

well we've had a rash of bad weather here. last friday it stormed fawking HARD, even spawned a couple tornadoes in the area. power has been out at the house where i'm keeping my car, so i've not been able to work on it. it actually just started storming again today and my power was off when i got home. it's looking like there won't be any work done to the car until this weekend.

TENTATIVELY, i'd like to get the brakes in with the linelock/ABS delete plumbed and get the oil pan, accessories that i DO have, and headers on the engine and POSSIBLY get the engine on the K-member...i kind of doubt i'll get that far, BUT that is the plan for now. i'll be sure to keep everyone posted ;)

Parts are back from the powdercoater and power is hooked back up, so the work will commence! Headers and everything look awesome, big thanks to Rick at Performance Coatings (local shop).

Here's a little closer shot. You can see I've hooked up the lines from my SJM linelock / ABS delete kit....the solenoid and proportioning valve are not bolted in because I'm 99.9999% certain I'm going to put them somewhere else, out of sight, but i wanted to see how they would look in their intended location.

I found 2 or 3 places to mount the solenoid and valve, BUT I'm second guessing my locations because i don't have the engine, steering shaft, fuse box, or wire harnesses in there and I'm not sure what will interfere with what. i have tentative plans to put the fuse block underneath it's original spot where the A.I.R. pump would be and run the wire harness in between the inner and outer fender like i have done on the passenger side...basically the !wire mod all over again on the driver's side...so that i can mount my proportioning valve on top of the frame rail where the wire harness usually would run.

NOW, the biggest issue i have right now, and have been aware of for a while, is with my windage tray....as some of you may be aware, a 4.125" stroke is pretty damn long and the stock windage tray just wont clear. I first had to drill out the holes in the stock tray just to get it to go over my ARP main studs. Next i had to put 7, that's right 7, 1/16" thick washers on top of each stud to shim the tray far enough away to get the rods to clear...even with them i had to make some minor clearance adjustments with a hammer.

When it was all said and done, the tray cleared but the tops of the main studs were flush with the top of the nuts, and i'd like to have some stud sticking out. Well, this wasn't the only issue...the pickup tube didn't line up with the stud it mounted to when it was bolted to the oil pump...some bending and cussing later, it fit...but when i mocked up the oil pan, it only had ~0.140" clearance with the bottom of the pickup and i need 0.250"-0.300". i was going to bend it some more to get the necessary tolerance like everyone else does until i decided i didn't like anything about any work i had done thus far...so i quit working on that and came home...bugs were eating me alive anyway.

Now, i didn't just give up. i had a goal in mind and with a little research it payed off when i followed an instinct. GMPP part # 19202613....LSX Windage Tray kit :bang:..."includes all necessary hardware" and "for 4.000"-4.125" strokes." Once i get one of those, i can take out all those washers, bolt it right on, be happy with the studs' stick-out, have all the clearance, and the pickup tube should be damn near perfect!

:chug:

I went ahead and put the alternator bracket on and motor mounts...

At this point, i'm pretty much on hold with the build until i can get that GMPP windage tray. i need that to get the motor in the car, and i want the motor in so i can see where i have wiggle room to hide my linelock/ABS delete hardware and a few other misc parts. in the mean time, i'm going to try to get the fuel system finished up and get the Torque arm mounted.

I was told the windage tray was to go into GM's system this week or early next week, so the wait SHOULDN'T be too long....hopefully...

ok, so i got a wild hair up my ass and decided to go ahead and put the engine in the car...it didn't happen. First off, i DID finally get my windage tray to work. what i did was took 3 "shims" (washers) OUT of it, i had 7 originally, and then beat the piss out of the tray everywhere it needed clearanced still. The allowed me to have some stud threads sticking out the tops of the nuts when it was all cinched down like i like to see.

http://i53.photobucket.com/albums/g50/freeman_nasty/IMG_0259.jpg

You can see in this pic the washers, these particular ones are on the rear studs and i had to grind them flat so the oil pan wouldn't hit them. i also replaced these nuts with some self-locking nuts with a little red lock-tite just for good measure...i'd hate to see one of those come off during operation...

http://i53.photobucket.com/albums/g50/freeman_nasty/IMG_0257.jpg

Now, for the shitty part....once i finally got all the windage tray issues sorted out, and got my oil pickup clearnace set, or at least really close, i went to fit the oil pan. If you recall, i picked up a Canton sheetmetal pan after selling my freshly powdercoated stock pan. Well, as it just so happens, when i finished checking clearances on my windage tray, i had left the engine with the first two rods at the bottom of their strokes, so they were as far down as they go in other words, and when i put the oil pan on, it hit the rod bolts :bang: yeah, with the engine upside down on the stand, and the oil pan sitting on it, i can turn the engine over by hand and the oil pan lifts off the block about 1/8" when those two rods come around

You can see here where my rod bolts "customized" the oil pan...

http://i53.photobucket.com/albums/g50/freeman_nasty/IMG_0264-1.jpg

SOOO...i'm either going to do some fabricating on a $450 oil pan, OR i'm going to sell it and get another aftermarket pan (Moroso) OR another stocker to powdercoat AGAIN...or i'm selling the whole setup, buying a Prius, and moving to san francisco :bang:....

are you sure it was the pan, and not the windage tray that needed clearance? Shane at Thunder Racing said the Moroso would fit and a fellow 'Tech member had a 4.1" stroke 440 (i think) that it fit on.

either way, the new pan will be here monday and i need to sell my old one.

Man i keep forgetting this thread...

Since my last post, i've sold my motorcycle and paid off some debt. I ordered a Tony Mamo-ported FAST 92 which will be here next week. i got all of my brake lines and ABS delete/linelock installed. I ordered UMI LCA relocation brackets for my 9". A BMR alternator bracket is in the mail also. My AN fittings and lines all showed up today for my remote oil filter, pictured below. I'm hunting for the last few parts i need such as an electric water pump, driveshaft, throttle body, and whatever else i've forgotten as well as get the hood painted. The car doesn't look TOO much different than the last pictures i posted, but a lot has happened since then.

The last picture you see is of the Koul Tools AN fitting/hose assemblers. They are worth 100000 times their weight in gold. All you do is cut your hose, put an AN nut in the tool which can then be put in a vise or handheld, and simply twist the hose into the fitting. Easy as pie, no ruined hose, no scarred up fittings, and best of all no bloody fingers or wasted afternoons.

Also need a TB larger than 92mm...probably gonna get a 96mm NW and STILL have to drill a hole in it. IAC counts are ~200 at "idle." i say "idle," it won't stay running with less than 5% throttle. Other than that, all is great. It sounds tough as hell.

no  i've had 3 different sets of rims on the car SINCE IT BROKE. i've bought a couple different sets that were damaged or cheap for whatever reason and repaired them myself. The 18" iForged wheels are what i have now and plan on sticking with. i WILL hopefully pick up some Bogarts for the track though, so i'll have 2 sets of wheels.

Those CCW 505A's were bought for under $1500 if i remember...maybe less its been so long. The tires were junk and the rims were pretty well trashed from all the curb rash, almost 360* around all 4 wheels, not to mention they were oxidized and hazed over to the point of appearing silver, not polished. They sold for right at $3000 after i was done with them :)

This is basically how i've paid for my car and its build-up. i don't make much money, $17/hour + overtime and/or field service when available. i've just been lucky enough to buy and sell stuff for a profit enough times to get me where i am. For example: picked up a '06 YFZ-450 at a repo auction for $1500 cash, traded with $750 for a turbo'd '99 civic si, traded straight across for a stock low mileage '03 civic si, traded straight across for a '05 GSX-R1000, sold for $5500. i got a ride a YFZ-450 in Little Sahara, drive one riced-out civic that actually ran low 13's, drove a 35mpg DD civic, put 4K miles on a liter bike, and came out ~$3K ahead.

yeah it should be going pretty quick. i'm going to try to get some exhaust on it tomorrow to see if that fixes its problems. its just open headers right now and i think that's why it is so rich, because of the O2's being so close to open air.

2000_SS
06-13-2010, 04:50 PM
"exhaust" is on the car now. it's just a Y-pipe with a straight section w/turn down. i had to splice in two V-band clamps to make it go in AFTER removing the tranny crossmember. It sounds wicked off idle at any RPM, but idling sounds like a Y-pipe...you know, nothing impressive. the cam makes it sound nasty, but it has no tone...due to the lack of muffler.

There's no muffler because i didn't end up using the Flowmaster Y-merge, it simply would not fit. it had a 4" outlet, so i had a 4" bullet. Now, however, it's all 3.5" all the way out. I only installed it to test the theory that my idle/rich issues were due to lack of exhaust. Turns out i was correct. The O2's were too close to open air and were causing a lean condition. The only thing is i still have to drill the TB blade out a little more. it's at 1/4" and will probably only need 5/16". Otherwise, the car runs fine now, i even drove it around the neighborhood once :) pissed off about 30 neighbors though

Here's the exhaust before the V-bands went in. i had to put one in the straight section on the driver's side and one right after the Y.

Here's a closeup of the Y. Nothing TOO impressive, but it is 3.5" and it does fit beautifully. It may be getting replaced by a 3.5" X-pipe setup soon :), otherwise it would be ceramic coated.

Long time since i checked in here...sorry fellas....the car has been waiting for some fair weather so i can get it aligned. now that the nice weather is here, i'm working 24/7. All the car needs now is to be tuned, which i will do after the alignment is done and it is tagged again.

couldn't ever get it to hook up, best 60' before i got kicked out was a 2.1xx if i recall...best pass was 11.23 @ 130mph :D...rear suspension needs a lot of dialing in, still rocking stock shocks and springs, race weight was 3560#'s....stil a T-56, NA, pump gas, etc...drove it there, drove it home....looking for 10.50's as it sits with minor adjustments, end goal is 9's NA pump gas T56....then it will get fast.
